The Enduring Legacy of Ethiopia and the Horn: A Historical Synthesis

Located 50 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa, at an altitude of 2,000 meters, this site is unique. Unlike the lowland savannas typical of early hominid finds, Melka Kunture shows that human ancestors thrived in a high-altitude, tropical mountain environment. The site contains a sequence of volcanic tuffs (layers of hardened ash) that date from 1.7 million years ago to the Middle Stone Age (less than 200,000 years ago). Melka Rufael Pdf
